A very rewarding litter pick around Buttermere today — mainly at the foot of the lake, along the northern shore, and through Buttermere Dubs. There was far more litter than expected, and the bags quickly became heavy with the number of dog poo bags collected. Because of this, we didn’t have the time or strength to continue along the southern shore. Sadly, that part was missed, but we hope to return another day very soon.

As I said, it was a very rewarding day, and my family really enjoyed it too. However, it was tarnished slightly towards the end when we arrived at Hassness Crag Wood. We had collected quite a lot of rubbish in the wooded area there and were resting on the log seats beside the path before beginning our return journey along the northern shore to Buttermere.

It was then that three groups of people walking past approached us and asked if they could put their rubbish in our bags. I agreed to the first two and said nothing, but when the third asked, I’m sorry to say I lost my patience. He had two paper cups and wanted me to take them, but I said “no.” He then started having a go at me. I was really upset and told him clearly: “We are not here to take your rubbish away for you. What you bring in, take home!” He replied: “It’s not my fault you’re having a bad day!” to which I sternly said: “It wasn’t a bad day until you turned up!” He walked off still shouting at me from a distance.

That said, so many others came up to us to say how thankful they were. That makes it all so worthwhile.

Anyhow, a lovely day out — and six bags collected. Many thanks to Jaclyn, Angie Walsh, Dave Scott, and little Emily.
