Today I spent the morning at the coastal village of Ravenglass, conducting some research for the Lakeland Way website. Warm sunshine and an abundance of daffodils made it quite a beautiful scene, and with not many people about, it was very peaceful.

I visited Dave’s Plastic Museum on Main Street to take some photos for an upcoming “point of interest” on the website. I was hoping to catch him at home but I think, due to it being such a lovely day, he may have been out on the beach somewhere collecting more additions for his museum.

I also visited the footbridge that spans the railway line. As some of you may be aware, it was recently reinstalled, having had a full makeover. I have to be honest though — it’s rather sad to see the safety fencing attached. This is due to the old handrails being too low for our modern way of life. If it has to be that high, I really hope they consider, or have a plan, to install a metal version in the same paintwork.

At the end, I witnessed a chap finishing his “Engine Driver Experience” on the Ratty turntable. It was a surprise birthday treat from his son and daughter-in-law, who were there to capture the moment. Apparently, you can book this experience for an individual to drive the steam train all the way to Irton Road and back. It was lovely to watch, but he seemed reluctant to get out of the cab!
