On the rare occasion, when it comes to photographing a longer walk for our Lakeland Routes website, we have to either recce part of the route or the full length. This could be because I’ve not walked a certain section before, or I’ve only done it once many years ago and have forgotten the exact line or some features. Today was one such example, as I’d not done the route before — the first half of the ‘Dunnerdale Round’ from Broughton Mills, walked clockwise. The line we settled on includes several undulating tops, an unorthodox scramble up Stickle Pike, and a visit to a disused quarry with an interesting adit.

On our next visit we’ll walk the second half of the round, which offers more of the same before the descent back to Broughton Mills. Walking and photographing the whole route in one go will, hopefully, be achieved in spring, when the days are slightly longer, the fells still hold their colour and the bracken has not yet resurfaced.
