Today turned into a rather funtastic family fungi hunt in Frith Wood, Borrowdale. We rounded things off with coffee and chips at the Glaramara Hotel, where we happened to meet two young lads from Michigan. They were planning their next walk and mentioned the Fairfield Horseshoe, but I suggested they try the Deepdale Round on the far side of Fairfield instead — which is a far better choice at this time of year. I hope they take the hint and stay in touch; it would be lovely to see them again on their next visit to Lakeland.
It has certainly been an exceptional year for fungi in the rain forests of Borrowdale, with the woods full of colour and oddities at every turn.
