Today I walked half of Day 8 on the Lakeland Way, Ambleside to Grasmere. I was hoping to get a few photos that I needed to complete the full set for this section, but sadly the light was poor and on top of that most of the autumn leaves are now gone. However, I didn’t want to waste my journey so I did the walk anyway. I parked in Grasmere and then caught the bus to Ambleside. I met this chap on the bus, who was on an adventure touring the country by walking and catching buses where he can. He had not planned a thing; just left his home 15 weeks ago and has no intention of stopping. He said he’s never owned a mobile phone or ever sent an email! I wished him well and then I headed off on my walk back to Grasmere.

Things I learnt today: hungry cows fight over a shredded wheat breakfast, Rydal Hall have herdy fell races, some oak trees have split personalities, a brown sauce sandwich is lovely with a dash of sausage, lots of living people now use the Coffin Route, there’s an outdoor gear shop in Grasmere called “Hawkshead”, and it’s only a 60p penalty if you urinate in Grasmere.
