Today I went to see an old friend. It’s been 5 years since I found the RAF boot below the north face of Great Gable, so I thought I would pay my respects while on a walk over Green Gable, Brandreth and Grey Knotts. I sat there at the crash site thinking about that night on 1st October 1942, when pilot Frederick Orchard Cadham was left there alone with a serious leg injury (hence the boot left there). Approximately 5 to 6 hours later, help did arrive, but sadly “Teddy” died on the way down to Black Sail Hut in Ennerdale.

On the walk I met a lovely group of American visitors, who were at the Honister Drum House listening to their very informative guide. I also visited the site of the Anson (DJ222) that crashed on the summit of Green Gable on 9th August 1943. All five airmen survived with varying degrees of injuries.
