It’s that time of year to take advantage of the beautiful heather in full colour, and there’s nowhere better in Lakeland than a route over Bleaberry Fell and Walla Crag; these were two new Wainwrights for Emily, so that’s taken her tally to 26 now. After Emily had checked the Wainwright guide, we left the car in Keswick and caught the bus to Dale Bottom in the Naddle Valley. It was then a steep unorthodox route up onto Dodd Crag, and a simple task of following the fence to the summit of Bleaberry Fell. On the route I searched and photographed all the old Manchester Corporation Water Works (M.C.W.W.) boundary stones. Many have sunken over the years since the expiry date of compulsory purchases of land around Thirlmere at the end of 1886. It was then a wonderful walk to Walla Crag and then back to Keswick.
